Electric vehicles exempt from registration fee in Delhi

Good news to Delhiites. Now, they need not pay the registration fee for electric vehicles. The Delhi government exempted the electric and battery-operated vehicles from the registration fee.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot yesterday in a tweet said that the government exempted registration fee for electric and battery-operated vehicles as promised by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

To promote electric vehicles, a new vehicle policy was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in August. He announced incentives to the buyers of electric vehicles under this initiative.

As per the announcement, the buyers of four-wheelers will get an incentive of up to ₹1.5 lakh while the buyers of two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and freight carriers will get an incentive of up to ₹30,000. He also assured waiving of road tax and registration fee.

As promised, the Delhi government announced exemption of road tax on battery-operated vehicles in the last week. Now, it announced the exemption of registration fee.

The Transport Department last week issued a notification stating the exemption of road tax on electric and battery-operated vehicles on the directions of the Chief Minister.

CM Kejriwal said that it is a vital step to make the national capital a pollution-free city.

The new electric vehicle policy aims to improve the use of electric vehicles in the coming years by incentivizing the buyers of these vehicles. It is estimated that the registration of battery-operated vehicles will increase to five lakhs by 2024.

Electric vehicles are zero pollution vehicles. They do not cause air pollution. Electric vehicles are considered a better option than petrol vehicles for the environment. Also, they emit fewer emissions than those of conventional vehicles. Hence, the use of electric vehicles has been rising globally.
