ECI announces poll dates for Lok Sabha elections
The term of the 16th Lok Sabha ends on June 3, 2019. In this context, yesterday evening, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections 2019.
As per the announced schedule, the voting would be held in seven phases between April 11, 2019, and May 19, 2019.
And, the counting of votes would be done on May 23, 2019. The results would be declared on the same day.
The Model Code of Conduct came into effect immediately after the announcement.
However, no announcement was made on the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Here are the details phase-wise:
- In the 1st phase, polling would be held in 91 constituencies in 20 states on April 11.
- In the 2nd phase, polling would be held in 97 constituencies in 13 states on April 18.
- In the 3rd phase, polling would be held in 115 constituencies in 14 states on April 23.
- In the 4th phase, polling would be held in 71 constituencies in 9 states on April 29.
- In the 5th phase, polling would be held in 51 constituencies in 7 states on May 6.
- In the 6th phase, polling would be held in 59 constituencies in 7 states on May 12.
- In the 7th phase, polling would be held in 59 constituencies in 8 states on May 19.
22 states would have polling in a single phase including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Goa etc.
Some states like Karnataka, Manipur, Rajasthan and Tripura would have votes in two phases. Some other states including Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha would have voting in four phases.
The ECI announced that approximately 10 lakh polling stations would be available in this Lok Sabha elections. In 2014 elections, only nine lakh polling stations were set up.
The last date for nomination for phase 1 election is March 25.
