Dr Reddy’s to distribute Sputnik V vaccine in India

While the entire world is struggling to fight against COVID-19, some countries are in busy developing a vaccine for it. Russia is one such country that developed a vaccine Sputnik V. It is the first registered vaccine for COVID-19 in the world, based on the human adenoviral vectors platform.

To conduct clinical trials and distribute Sputnik V vaccine or Russia in India, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has partnered with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.

Both have agreed to conduct clinical trials and distribute 100 million doses in India.

The RDIF said in a statement that it would supply 100 million doses of Sputnik V vaccine to Dr Reddy’s Laboratories upon receiving the regulatory approval.


The deliveries would start in late 2020 based on the successful completion of trials and other regulatory approvals.

The vaccine is undergoing clinical trials. It is based on human adenoviral vector platform.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the RDIF said that the vaccine would help India to combat against COVID-19 as it is one among the most severely affected countries. He said that it is an efficient and harmless drug.

The platform of human adenoviral vectors is proven to be safe and effective. It has been tested over decades and found safe with no probable ill effects.

A research on the clinical trials of Phase I and Phase II of the Sputnik V was published in ‘The Lancet’, a renowned medical journal. The results indicated no serious side effects. Besides, the immune response was steady in all the participants.

Around 55,000 volunteers have applied to involve in post-registration clinical trials which are continuing. The results are likely to be published in October or November 2020.

GV Prasad, co-chairman and managing director of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, said that the clinical trials of phase I and phase II, have shown positive results. The company will conduct phase III trials as per the regulatory requirements.
