Common Medical Entrance exam approved
National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) for medical courses has been approved by the Supreme Court.
This helps in creating a common entrance test for all medical courses across the country. Many people might remember the order by Supreme Court by 2013 which removed the common entrance test for admissions to MBBS, BDS, and PG course in all medical colleges. With this new decision, the apex court has over ridden that order.
After hearing a review petition regarding NEET, the Supreme Court said that it will hear the case about validity of the common entrance test again. The court gave the order that until the matter is decided, NEET can be implemented.
In June 2013, this case has been ruled by Supreme Court and the ruling was that the Medical Council of India (MCI)’s notification for holding common entrance tests for MBBS, BDS and post-graduate medical courses is invalid. It was ruled by a three-judge bench. With a 2:1 verdict, it was ruled that the notification was against the Constitution.
Furthermore, the SC ruled that MCI did not have the jurisdiction to enforce common entrance test (CET) on private medical colleges. They also said that the move could violate constitutional guarantee for minority communities to establish and manage their own educational institutions.
The ruling by the Supreme Court was obviously opposed by the MCI and it has moved the court for a review. An MCI official has said that having so many medical entrance tests has many disadvantages.
Students are being forced to pay a lot of money as fee for appearing in various exams. There are also travel expenses and many students are losing the opportunity to stake admission claim to different colleges. At present, there are more than 90 medical entrance tests being held across India. Many students have to apply for multiple tests which is leading to many issues.
