BHU study suggests single dose of vaccine for COVID recovered

As the country has been facing a shortage of vaccines, a new study claims that only one dose of vaccine is sufficient for COVID-19 recovered patients.

Currently, two doses of vaccine are recommended for the production of antibodies in the body.

However, a team of scientists from Banaras Hindu University stated that a single dose of the vaccine is enough for people who recovered from COVID-19, as they found it in their research.

The team includes five scientists, two from the Department of Neurology, and three from the Department of Zoology. Professor VN Mishra and Professor Abhishek Pathak are from the Department of Neurology. Professor Gyaneshwar Chaubey, Prajwal Singh, and Pranav Gupta are from the Department of Zoology.

Currently, two vaccines are there in the country for COVID-19. While the country has a huge population, it is difficult to vaccinate all people with the existing production capacity of vaccine manufacturers. Though they are ramping up their production capacity, it takes some time. In this context, the study of BHU scientists helps overcome vaccine shortage to some extent.

Recently, the BHU scientists conducted a study on 20 people. Among them, some were infected with COVID-19 and recovered, and the remaining were not contracted with COVID-19. In their study, they found that people who recovered from COVID-19 had developed antibodies in the first week. It took three to four weeks for non-infected people to develop antibodies.

The first dose of vaccine produced enough antibodies within 10 days in people who recovered from COVID-19, while the time was around three to four weeks for non-infected people.

The researchers wrote a letter to PM Modi in this regard, suggesting that a single dose of vaccine would be sufficient for the people who recovered from COVID-19. They hope the research will help overcome the shortage of vaccines. They also sent their research to be published in the American Journal, Science Immunology.
