Singapore-based World Toilet Organization is helping Andhra Pradesh on a 1.8 billion SGD project. It is a first of its kind project in India set to build toilets for six million homes in the state by the year 2018.

Jack Sim, founding father of World toilet Organisation in 2001, is optimistic and driven by the goal of “making the toilet the happiest room in India”.

He recalled that he grew up in impoverishment in Singapore when sanitation was bad and saw Singapore improve in each side, as well as cleaning up the Singapore river and improving the sewage works.

Sim who is called ‘Mr Toilet’, was appointed by Andhra Pradesh as co-convenor of the project. He added that this gives him confidence that what we’ve done in Singapore can be transferred to Andhra Pradesh.

The idea is to have individuals feel a sense of interest over their hygiene and toilets, so that after the building is over the toilets will actually be used, The Sunday Times quoted Sim.

He further added that the central government is supporting the project, driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stress on making a ‘Clean India’.

Andhra Pradesh’s legislative speaker and also the toilet project convenor Kodela Siva Prasada Rao was in Singapore with different state officials to meet Sim yesterday.

The toilet project with World toilet Organization is the 1st of its kind in India, added Kodela, who hopes that Andhra Pradesh can become an example for the remainder of India.
