Pregnancy can be one of the most wonderful experiences of a woman’s life, bearing one’s own child for nine months and then giving birth to new life. Melasma or Chloasma, the discoloration of the skin during pregnancy, is often increased by exposure to sunlight, which causes the skin to produce more melanin in order to reduce the damage done by the sun’s rays.

Although the condition is temporary, there are several ways to treat it during pregnancy. Avoid exposure to sunlight, and refrain from using harsh skin care products, since the skin is very sensitive during pregnancy. Grape seed oil is an excellent remedy for treating Melasma, since it is rich in proanthocyanidins, which can effectively prevent the secretion of melanin. Mix a few drops of this with some coconut oil and apply it to dark patches twice a day.


Pomegranate juice is rich in ellagic acids, which can lighten Melasma patches. Peel a fresh pomegranate, blend its seeds in a blender, and then strain and extract the juice. Regularly massage this on the affected areas.

Aloe vera can treat both Melasma and skin dryness, and it can also provide protection from sunlight damage, making it a perfect treatment for pregnancy-related skin issues. Extract the gel from a fresh aloe leaf and massage it onto the affected areas. Keep it on for 15 minutes, and then wash it off.

Sandalwood paste has both cooling and bleaching benefits, and it also reduces skin irritation. Mix 1 teaspoon of sandalwood paste with 2 teaspoons of water, and apply this paste on the affected areas. Wash it off after 15 minutes.

Almonds are rich in both protein and Vitamin E, which can lighten the complexion of the skin, remove skin dryness, and provide nourishment for the skin.

Soak a handful of almonds overnight, and then peel them and blend them in a blender with some water.

Strain the milk from this mixture and apply it on the affected areas.
