Causes of toothache

Reasons for toothache

A toothache is the most common dental issues. While some people have sharp or throbbing pain in the tooth, others may feel the pain only by applying pressure to it. Tooth pain is also associated with other symptoms like swelling around the tooth, foul taste, headache, and fever.

There are many reasons for a toothache. Know about them.

  • Tooth decay or cavity is the most common cause of tooth pain for many people. It can damage the inner layer of the tooth. If the decay reaches the centre, it can cause severe pain. Visit a dentist immediately and get medicines.
  • Your tooth may be fractured if you bite a food item that is hard or sticky. Sometimes it may happen in sports or by falling on the ground. If the fracture reaches the centre of the tooth with nerve endings, then you feel toothache. Tooth fractures cause severe pain. Your dentist helps you deal with the pain.
  • Many people are not aware of proper brushing methods. They do not even pay attention to it. They use excess pressure while brushing their teeth which causes inflammation and bleeding in the gums. It is one of the reasons for a toothache.
  • Misaligned wisdom teeth are another reason for a toothache. Due to misalignment, both teeth press against each other and thereby cause pain. Your dentist can align the teeth with braces.
  • Some people have a habit of grinding their teeth while sleeping without knowing it. Some others do it in stressful conditions. It can cause pain, sore jawbones, headaches etc.
  • Dental fillings can also lead to tooth pain. When your doctor fills the deep pits, grooves or fractures to protect the teeth, it may result in further damage sometimes. In such cases, sensitive parts of the tooth may cause sharp pain when they are exposed to temperature and bacteria.
  • Gum diseases cause severe pain due to inflammation of the oral bone.
