Tips for healthy and strong teeth

Maintaining strong teeth is essential at any age. While brushing and flossing are crucial, diet and overall health can also play a significant role in keeping teeth healthy.

Enamel, the outer surface of the tooth, protects it from decay, and its strength is key to maintaining healthy teeth.

However, once enamel is lost or damaged, it cannot be restored or repaired.

The good news is that there are ways to make enamel stronger, and here are some tips to help protect your teeth.

It’s essential to avoid foods that harm your teeth. Sugary and starchy foods can feed bacteria, which produce acid that harms tooth enamel. Sour candy, in particular, is a considerable risk to enamel as it contains both sugar and citric acid.

Drinking plenty of water can help boost your saliva levels. Saliva helps transfer calcium to your teeth.

Additionally, consuming enamel-strengthening foods is essential. Calcium-rich foods neutralize the acid. They even help to add minerals back into the tooth surfaces.

Dairy products are a great calcium source, but vegetables like broccoli, kale, and leafy greens are also good non-dairy options.

Practising proper brushing techniques is also important. Waiting at least 30 minutes after eating sweets or citrus fruits is recommended to avoid grinding acid into your teeth.

The American Dental Association recommends using fluoride toothpaste to help teeth resist acid from foods and bacteria. Using a soft-bristled brush at a 45-degree angle and not brushing too forcefully can help prevent gum damage.

Grinding your teeth can lead to fracturing, chipping, and even losing teeth entirely. Wearing a fitted mouth guard when sleeping is a possible solution. Additionally, stress-management techniques may also help.

Do not forget to visit your dentist every six months for regular cleaning and checkups. Regular exams can help catch dental problems before they cause serious damage.

Certain foods and vitamins can also promote healthy teeth. Cheese and milk contain necessary minerals and reduce acid in the mouth.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables help clean teeth, while nuts have a high mineral content and stimulate saliva flow.

Fatty fish provide phosphorus, a vital mineral for healthy enamel, and shiitake mushrooms have antimicrobial properties that can prevent tooth decay.

Additionally, a diet rich in proper vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin D, can promote healthy teeth.

Dairy products are a good source of Vitamin D, but for those who are lactose-intolerant, supplements can help ensure healthy levels.

Eating healthy fats and probiotic-rich foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and Greek yoghurt can increase the absorption of Vitamins D and A.
