Home remedies to reduce cholesterol
High cholesterol leads to several health problems including cardiovascular diseases. As per the report of the Indian Heart Association, high cholesterol is common among South Asians. This is due to genetics, unhealthy dietary habits, and a lack of physical activity.
The population-based studies showed that the urban population is more prone to cardiovascular diseases than the rural population.
Around 30 per cent of the urban population and 20 per cent of the rural population in India are suffering from high cholesterol problem.
Here are some natural and home remedies to reduce cholesterol:
- Garlic has several health benefits. Garlic extract effectively decreases LDL cholesterol and thereby the risk of heart problems. So, have one garlic clove each day. However, garlic should not be consumed along with blood-thinning medicines.
- Flax seeds are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids, lignans, and soluble fibre. Previous studies showed that consumption of flaxseed drink reduced total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol by 12 per cent and 15 per cent. Hence, consume flax seeds regularly.
- Having medicinal properties, fenugreek seeds or methi seeds can lower LDL cholesterol. Consume ½ to 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds regularly.
- Holy basil has potential to prevent the risk of atherosclerosis in the blood vessels which is mainly caused due to high cholesterol. Chew some basil leaves daily or drink basil tea.
- Containing powerful component curcumin, turmeric helps lower both LDL and total cholesterol in the blood.
- The artichoke leaf extract contains phytochemicals. Hence, it can lower cholesterol levels and cardiovascular problems.
- Some studies showed that the yarrow extract reduced total cholesterol by 39 per cent.
- Coriander seeds are widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. A research proved that coriander seeds can lower bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels substantially.
- Psyllium husk contains soluble fibre. Hence, it helps lower LDL cholesterol significantly.
