Home Remedies for Swollen feet

One can experience the problem of swollen feet for different reasons. But, they may not be serious at all times. The most common causes of swollen feet include lifestyle factors, ill-fitting shoes, staying on your feet for too long, pregnancy, certain medical conditions, side effects to certain medicines etc.

Certain medical conditions like an ankle injury, edema, lymphedema, kidney problems, liver diseases and heart problems also cause swollen feet.

If you have symptoms for a long time, then you have to seek the assistance of a physician.

There are certain home remedies for swollen feet to treat them in the initial stage.


Here is a list:

  • Drinking enough water helps solve many issues in the body. Drink at least eight glasses per day.
  • Epsom salt or magnesium sulfate eases muscle pain and relaxes your feet. Hence, soak your feet in Epsom salt-filled water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Compression socks ease pain and reduce swelling. Wear lightweight socks measuring between 12 and 15 mm or 15 and 20 mm of mercury. You can also use ice packs to reduce swelling.
  • Elevate your feet above your heart for 20 minutes at a time. Repeat it several times. It relaxes your feet and reduces swelling. Also, avoid standing for long periods to prevent your feet from swelling.
  • Similarly, avoid long-sitting hours. Stand and walk in between the working hours or move a little bit every hour.
  • Add magnesium-rich foods like tofu, broccoli, avocados etc. to your diet. If you have a magnesium deficiency, consume magnesium supplements with the advice of your physician.
  • Potassium deficiency can also cause fluid retention in the body. So, consume potassium-rich foods like sweet potatoes, bananas, salmon, chicken etc. However, if you are suffering from kidney disease, consult your doctor before adding these food items to your diet.
  • Reduce your sodium intake to lower swelling in your feet. If you are overweight, try to reduce your weight to improve your blood circulation and prevent swollen feet.
  • Massaging your feet helps not just relax but reduce swelling in them.
