This creeping plant is native to the wetlands of Southern and Eastern India.
It can be used in a powder which is mixed with milk or juice or tablets made from the extract.
Brahmi has several health benefits:
- One of the most significant benefits of Brahmi is that it improves memory and brain function. Brahmi contains saponins and bacosides that interact the neurotransmitters to enhance the function of the brain. It also improves the production of serotonin, the happy chemical to uplift the mood.
- Some studies showed that Brahmi helps reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels in animals. Thus, it is proved to control high blood pressure levels in animals. However, more research is required in humans to confirm the same result.
- It also reduces stress hormone cortisol and calms the nervous system.
- Brahmi extract treats wounds, cuts and burns. Application of Brahmi oil on wounds prevents spreading of infection.
- It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence can reduce diseases.
- It protects skin from free radicals and other damages.
- It promotes immunity and fights against various diseases.
- Being rich in antioxidants, Brahmi can effectively prevent the growth of cancerous cells in the body.
- It also controls blood sugar.
- It treats Alzheimer’s disease due to the presence of bacosides in it.
Precautions:
Brahmi can be used for a short-term of up to 12 weeks. However, pregnant women and lactating mothers can stay away with it. People with stomach ulcers, slow heart rate and lung problems like asthma should also avoid using it. If you are using medicine to increase thyroid hormone level, then consult your physician before using Brahmi as it is believed to raise thyroid levels.
