Eat these foods to prevent cataract

A cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye. It is one of the most leading causes of blindness in older adults. However, cataracts can develop in young adults also.

Free radicals or oxidation are the main cause of cataracts.  Not only cataracts but many degenerative diseases are also caused by free radicals or oxidation.

Hence, antioxidants help prevent cataracts. Vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, selenium, carotenoids, lutein etc., are some important antioxidants.

The following foods help prevent cataracts and eye diseases naturally:


  • Carrots are good for the eyes. It has beta-carotene and carotenoids. Zeaxanthin present in carrots absorbs ultraviolet rays in sunlight and prevents cataracts.
  • Broccoli is loaded with antioxidants. It protects the body against free radicals and degenerative diseases.
  • Eggs have lutein and zeaxanthin. They also contain Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that helps prevent cataracts and eye damage.
  • Salmon is rich in carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids. It protects your body from free radicals. Some studies showed that people who consumed fish at least three times a week had a lower risk of developing cataracts than those who consumed fish only once a month.
  • Walnuts have plenty of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. They can fight against inflammation and help prevent cataracts.
  • Berries like blueberries, bilberries etc., contain many nutrients and anthocyanins. They are used to treat many eye disorders, including cataracts. Some studies also proved that bilberries could treat age-related ocular disorders.
  • Avocadoes are loaded with many nutrients like vitamins like C, E, and B6, and antioxidants like beta-carotene, lutein etc. They can protect your eyes from the damage of free radicals.
  • Oranges are packed with antioxidants and vitamins like C. Consumption of oranges can reduce the risk of developing cataracts.
  • Green tea can also protect against age-related cataracts to some extent. A few studies proved that.
