Early signs of lung cancer
Lung cancer is one of the most common and well-known forms of cancer, as well as one of the deadliest.
The lungs are vital organs, allowing the body to breathe and intake the oxygen needed for the blood.
Lung cancer can easily cause death when left untreated, but when it is recognized at its early stages, it can be treated and even cured.
These are some of the early symptoms of lung cancer that should be recognized and detected in order to avoid the onset of this fatal disease.
A persistent cough can indicate lung cancer, especially if it worsens over time. Viruses, such as the common cold or the flu, can cause temporary coughs, but a constant cough can be a sign of cancer.
Coughing up blood or large amounts of mucus could also indicate lung cancer.
One symptom of lung cancer is chest pain, which can worsen with deep breathing, laughing, or coughing. Chest pain caused by lung cancer is persistent, unlike other causes of chest pain.
Another symptom of lung cancer is breath shortness or rapid breathing. Wheezing or making a whistling sound while breathing can also be signs of cancer.
Breathing difficulty can worsen when doing rigorous activities, such as climbing stairs.
Sudden, unexplained weight loss or appetite loss can be a sign of lung cancer. Unexplained fatigue and weakness can be symptoms of the disease as well.
If lung cancer spreads to the bones, it can cause pain in the back, the shoulders, or the abdomen.
It may be hard to tell the difference between bone pain and muscle pain, but unlike muscle pain, bone pain is worse while resting at night.
Painful, swollen, and reddened fingertips, without any external cause, can be a sign of lung cancer.
This symptom can be detected while doing everyday chores, since thick, swollen fingertips make chores difficult to do.
