Diet Plan for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease which disrupts communication between the brain and the body. It is one of the most common neurological disorders. Over 2 million people across the globe are affected by multiple sclerosis.

While some people experience mild symptoms and others experience severe symptoms. The symptoms depend on the amount of nerve damage. People with severe symptoms may lose the ability to walk.

The common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include fatigue, dizziness, numbness in limbs, prickling pain in some part of the body, and partial or complete loss of vision.

Though no cure is available for this condition, disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) and corticosteroids help ease the symptoms. Lifestyle changes also help manage the disease.

People with multiple sclerosis need a balanced diet. Below is a diet plan:

  • Consuming more fruits and vegetable helps ease constipation due to dietary fibre. The antioxidants in these food items aid in lowering the progression of the disease. Hence, consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
  • Add fish like salmon, mackerel etc. to your diet twice a week. Fish has omega-3-fatty-acids to improve heart health, lower inflammation and control blood pressure.
  • Deficiency of vitamin D leads to several health problems, especially bone problems. So, consume vitamin D rich food like cheese and fatty fish to slow down the progression of the disease. D vitamin also plays a vital role in treating the condition in the early stage.
  • Consume a moderate amount of carbohydrates to treat fatigue and get enough energy. Having a smaller meal several times throughout the day can help reduce fatigue. Consume healthy snacks in between the meals.
  • High sodium intake is not good for the body. It can increase the risk of multiple sclerosis. Hence, reduce the consumption of salt and replace it with black pepper, garlic powder etc.
  • Drink at least two litres of water to keep your body hydrated. Water improves digestion, bladder health and many functions of the body.
