Insights into India’s online shopping habits

In the fast-paced world of online shopping, Swiggy Instamart has emerged as a significant player, delivering groceries and essentials promptly.

The platform’s 2024 report sheds light on fascinating trends in consumer behaviour across India.

One of the most striking revelations was the increased demand for sexual wellness products.

Bengaluru led the country in condom purchases, with one in every 140 orders including such items.

Late-night shopping sprees also gained momentum, with the most orders placed between 10 PM and 11 PM.

Popular nighttime picks included masala chips, Kurkure, and flavoured condoms, particularly in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

Top Cities and Spending Trends

Delhi and Dehradun claimed the title of the biggest spenders, collectively surpassing ₹20 lakhs in orders this year.

Kitchen staples such as atta, milk, and oil dominated these purchases.

Mumbai, on the other hand, showcased its pet-loving side, with one user spending over ₹15,00,000 on pet supplies like dog and cat food.

Another interesting highlight from Mumbai was a single-day expenditure of ₹8,20,360 on tonic water.

Most Popular Items Nationwide

Across India, the five most frequently ordered items were milk, curd, dosa batter, chips, and soft drinks. This trend reflects the nation’s preference for daily essentials and quick snacks.

On December 1, consumers collectively ordered an astounding 4,500 kilograms of onions between 7 PM and 8 PM.

Notable Milestones

Kochi set a record for the fastest delivery of the year, with an order of Nendran bananas and red amaranthus delivered in just 89 seconds across a mere 180 meters.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad recorded the cheapest order—a pencil sharpener priced at just ₹3.

Swiggy Instamart’s report captures the diverse and evolving preferences of Indian consumers, highlighting the impact of convenience on shopping habits.

From late-night snacks to kitchen staples, the platform continues to shape the online retail experience in India.
