ASC ARJUN: Railways unveil smart security robot

Technology is steadily redefining public transport security across India.

In a landmark move, the Railway Protection Force launched a humanoid robot named “ASC ARJUN” at Visakhapatnam Railway Station.

This marks the first such deployment in Indian Railways. Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra and Inspector General Alok Bohra formally introduced the innovation.

Developed entirely in Visakhapatnam, the robot reflects indigenous engineering excellence. A dedicated team led by Divisional Security Commandant A.K. Dubey worked for over a year.

Under senior guidance, they built a system tailored to real-time railway challenges.

ASC ARJUN strengthens surveillance and passenger support functions. It uses advanced Artificial Intelligence and IoT connectivity.

As a result, it delivers real-time monitoring and rapid alerts. The robot identifies intruders through a Face Recognition System.

It instantly notifies RPF teams via IoT-enabled communication. Consequently, response time drops significantly.

Moreover, the machine performs AI-based passenger density analysis. This feature helps prevent overcrowding during peak hours.

It sends live updates to the control room. Therefore, security teams can act before congestion escalates.

The robot also improves passenger engagement. It delivers safety and awareness announcements in Telugu, Hindi, and English.

These multilingual alerts enhance compliance and clarity. In addition, semi-autonomous navigation enables continuous patrol along predefined paths. Obstacle detection ensures smooth movement within busy platforms.

Importantly, ASC ARJUN reduces manpower strain while maintaining a 24×7 presence. It monitors cleanliness zones and sensitive areas.

Early fire and smoke detection further strengthens emergency preparedness. Instant alerts allow swift intervention and minimise risks.

Railway authorities view this initiative as part of a broader modernisation strategy.

By integrating AI-driven tools, the RPF aims to boost operational efficiency. Furthermore, digital transformation supports smarter crowd management.

With ASC ARJUN deployed at Visakhapatnam Railway Station, the city marks a significant step in railway innovation.

The initiative highlights a forward-looking approach where advanced robotics strengthens security systems and works alongside personnel to enhance surveillance, efficiency, and passenger safety.
