Railway safety mechanisms came into sharp focus after a fire broke out in the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express near Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh.

Consequently, the West Central Railway initiated a high-level investigation to determine the cause of the incident and strengthen future safety measures.

The West Central Railway formed a six-member inquiry committee consisting of senior railway officials. The General Manager of WCR constituted the panel immediately after the incident.

Moreover, the committee includes officers from West Central Railway, Integral Coach Factory, and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation.

The Principal Chief Safety Officer of WCR will lead the investigation as the committee’s convener. Other members include senior electrical, mechanical, and security officials from the railway departments.

According to railway authorities, the panel will closely examine technical failures, operational aspects, and existing safety systems.

Officials stated that the inquiry would follow the guidelines mentioned in the Accident Manual. Therefore, the committee must complete its findings within the prescribed timeline.

Railway authorities also clarified that the investigation aims to identify the exact cause and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents.

The fire incident occurred early Sunday morning at around 5:15 am. The affected train, numbered 12431, was travelling through Ratlam district in Madhya Pradesh.

Reports indicated that flames emerged from the B-1 AC coach while the train moved between Luni Richha and Vikramgarh Alot stations in the Kota Division of WCR.

In addition, one LWRRM coach, used as a luggage brake and generator car, was also affected. Railway staff responded quickly after detecting the fire.

Authorities immediately switched off the overhead electric supply to avoid further risk. Subsequently, officials detached the damaged coach from the rake to control the situation efficiently.

Importantly, no passenger or railway staff member suffered injuries during the incident. The prompt response from railway personnel helped prevent panic and ensured passenger safety.

Meanwhile, railway officials continue to assess the extent of damage caused to the coaches.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict maintenance checks and emergency preparedness in long-distance premium trains.
