Tips for healthy gums

Oral hygiene plays a vital role in the overall health of an individual. Healthy gums contribute to oral hygiene and keep teeth in good condition.

When plaque accumulates on the teeth, it leads to gum diseases. Bacteria produce acids that damage tooth enamel. They also lead to cavities in the teeth, which causes soft and sensitive gums.

Regular brushing helps remove bacterial plaque on the teeth. If plaque stays for more than 24 hours, it will harden and turn into tartar. It damages gums and may even result in the loss of permanent teeth.

Bleeding and swollen gums, bad breath, sensitive teeth and pus are some symptoms of gum diseases.

Here are some tips for healthy gums:

  • Brushing, especially proper brushing, helps remove dental plaque and keeps the health of gums. Many studies showed that electric toothbrushes removed dental plaque more efficiently than regular ones. Though they are more expensive, they promote the health of gums.
  • It is recommended to brush after every meal and snack in a circular motion. Start brushing with the top molars, then brush the upper teeth, bottom molars and lower teeth. It is the suggested way of brushing your teeth. If it is not possible to brush after every meal and snack, rinse your mouth with water thoroughly. Brush your teeth at least twice daily.
  • Clean your tongue after brushing your teeth to prevent bacteria that cause bad breath. Use a soft tongue cleaner for that.
  • Change your toothbrush every three to four months. Use a compatible brush that suits you the best. If you use an electric toothbrush, replace it as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • You may not clean your teeth properly if you have crooked teeth as the toothbrush cannot reach all areas. Flossing is helpful in such situations. Floss regularly to prevent the building-up of plaque on the teeth.
  • Eat healthy foods like leafy greens, high-fibre fruits and vegetables for a healthy gum. Foods that contain fluoride, like poultry, promote oral health. Dairy products and sugar-free chewing gums increase saliva production.
  • Oil pulling helps control bacteria and bad breath. While coconut oil is recommended for the purpose, you can also use sesame oil or sunflower oil to prevent the accumulation of dental plaque.
