New draft rules for displaying fitness certificate on vehicle
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued new draft rules on Thursday on the display of fitness certificates and registration marks on vehicles.
As per the notification, vehicle owners have to show the validity of fitness certificates and registration marks on their vehicles in a prescribed manner by the government. In other words, displaying the validity of fitness certificates and others on a vehicle is mandatory as per the new draft rules issued by the government.
A fitness certificate is mandatory for all vehicles running on the road as per the notification of MoRTH.
The fitness certificate will be similar to the number plate of a vehicle. It shows the expiry date of vehicle fitness. The date on the fitness certificate should be in the DD-MM-YY format.
As per the notification of MoRTH, the prescribed manners for different vehicles to have fitness certificates are as follows:
Owners of all heavy and medium goods or passenger vehicles and all light motor vehicles shall display the fitness certificate on the upper edge of the left side of the windscreen of the vehicle.
The same shall apply to auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, e-cart, and quadricycles. That means the fitness certificate has to be displayed on the upper edge of the left side of the windscreen if fitted.
Bike owners shall display the certificate visibly on their vehicles. The information will have to be displayed in yellow colour on a blue ground. The script shall be in Arial Bold.
The ministry invited suggestions from the stakeholders and common people in the next 30 days.
As per available data with the government, around 51 lakh light motor vehicles in the country are more than 20 years old, and 34 lakhs are over 15 years old.
Also, nearly 17 lakh medium and heavy commercial vehicles are over 15 years. They are running on the roads without fitness certificates.
