Common types of sleep disorders and treatment
Sleep is vital for proper body functions. Certain physical or psychological factors and medical conditions lead to sleeping disruption.
Insomnia or inability to sleep is one of the common sleeping disorders. Regular sleeping time, proper pillow, an exercise in the evening, bathing before bedtime etc. can help treat it.
Other most common sleeping disorders are mentioned as below:
Snoring is another most common sleeping disorder. The throat muscles relax and close the airway during the sleep. When the air gets forced through relaxed tissues in your throat, they vibrate, and a harsh sound occurs as you breathe in and out. Sinuses, alcohol consumption, obesity, allergies etc. are some factors that cause snoring. Address the underlying cause and treat it. Sometimes, sleep apnea may be the cause. So, consult your physician to diagnose the reason.
Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing is obstructed intermittently during sleep. It leads to a decrease in the oxygen level in blood. Treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure therapy).
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is an uncontrollable sensation in legs like pins and needles. Anaemia, obesity, and pregnancy are some factors that lead to RLS. Consuming iron-rich foods and pills help treat this condition.
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder. It affects sleep. As a result, the person feels sleepiness in the day. People who suffer from narcolepsy also experience sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and cataplexy. Antidepressant medicines and stimulants can treat the disorder.
In sleep paralysis, a person is unable to move their body when they want to wake up from sleep. The person even though is awake, cannot move or talk. This condition lasts for a few seconds. In some people, it can last for more time and up to minutes. Counselling and medicines help treat this condition.
Chronic fatigue syndrome and seasonal affective disorder are other sleep disorders.
