#MeToo in India
#MeToo is a movement against the sexual assault and sexual harassment.
Tarana Burke, an activist from Harlem launched this movement a decade ago to support the poor women of color who were affected by sexual abuse.
Though the #MeToo movement started in Hollywood nearly a year ago, it is now gaining popularity in India.
At that time, several allegations of sexual misconduct and rape were made against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. But, he did not accept those allegations.
Then, the Bollywood remained in silence. But, now #MeToo is becoming popular in India starting with the allegations of Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta against veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar claiming that he misbehaved with her on a film set in 2008.
With this, #MeToo movement exploded in India and several famous personalities and powerful men are now accused of their predatory behavior towards women.
After that, several celebrities came forward to share their bad experiences under the #MeToo movement. Kangana Ranaut, Chinmayi Sripada, Flora Saini, Amyra Dastur, Vinita Nanda, Jwala Gutta etc. are some of them who raised their voices against sexual harassment. Actress Samantha supported by expressing her solidarity to the #MeToo India movement.
She appreciated all the brave women who come out and speak up against the sexual abuse. She said that she will support the movement.
Several other journalists and singers are also sharing their experience on social media.
Now, the impact of movement spread to politics too.
MJ Akbar, the Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs is accused of his predatory behavior. Other allegations on him include the invitations to the young women to hotel rooms in the name of meetings.
Though he or his ministry did not respond to this allegations, Maneka Gandhi, the Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development said that all allegations on this movement must be probed.
