The man behind free ambulance services in Rajapalayam

In a small corner of Tamil Nadu, acts of silent heroism unfold every day, not in grand gestures, but in the quiet resolve of Mohamad Basith, a 28-year-old from Rajapalayam, who has turned personal struggle into public service.

Raised by a single mother who juggled multiple jobs to educate her children, Basith grew up understanding the value of life’s basics: food, shelter, dignity.

In her honour, he named his ambulance service ‘Annai’, meaning mother, a tribute to the sacrifices that shaped his life.

After completing his degree but failing to find a job in his field, Basith worked as a private ambulance driver.

The emotional toll of seeing families suffer during medical emergencies planted a seed in his mind to start his own ambulance service, free for those who couldn’t afford one.

One of the most heartbreaking moments came when he transported a newborn and her grandmother back to their village.

The child’s mother had died during childbirth, and Basith ensured her final journey was handled with dignity, without charging a rupee for the 15 km trip to Chokkanathanputhur.

Over the years, Basith’s compassion has touched many. A young girl battling kidney disease was among those he helped.

Her single mother, a daily wage earner, couldn’t afford repeated hospital visits. Basith personally drove them to Tirunelveli over eight times, expecting nothing in return.

But his work doesn’t stop at transportation. Basith assists the homeless, mentally ill, and abandoned, helping them find shelter and medical care.

At government hospitals, when families are lost in red tape or can’t afford basic scans, he steps in to help.

During the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, he performed final rites for the unclaimed dead, ensuring they were not forgotten.

He is supported in all this by his wife, Anisha Fathima, a nurse who offers free medical aid to those in need.

Basith dreams of expanding his service, adding more ambulances and starting a shelter home for the elderly.

In a world often lacking empathy, his actions remind us that one person’s kindness can become a lifeline for many.

His story is not just one of service, but of quiet heroism that deserves to be known and supported.
