A heartfelt tribute: Free meals for heroes at Thirumurugan Idli Shop

R Karthikeyan’s life-changing motorcycle accident in 2009, which could have been fatal if not for a quick-thinking ambulance driver, sparked a profound gratitude towards those who serve in critical roles.

This gratitude turned into a generous initiative when Karthikeyan and his wife Manisha opened the Thirumurugan Idli Shop in Kattur, Tiruchy.

Their food van has been operational since March 2021 after an investment of ₹1.5 lakhs. It offers free food to ambulance drivers and army personnel, honouring their invaluable service to the community.

The couple’s personal connection to the army, with both their grandfathers having served, deepens their commitment to this cause.

Their food van has become a beacon of appreciation. It stands out with its unique offering of Vadivel dosa and Muttai Nila Dosa and a heartwarming slogan that catches the eye of many passers-by.

The initiative has garnered positive attention, reflecting the community’s support for their noble cause.

Open from 6:30 PM to 11 PM, the shop feeds those who serve or have served in the ambulance services and the military. In addition, it also aims to spread awareness of their sacrifices through social media.

Manisha, with a degree in computer science, and Karthikeyan, a mechanical engineer turned entrepreneur, have found their true calling in serving those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Their story is not just about providing free meals; it’s a narrative of respect, sacrifice, and community service.

The couple plans to expand their initiative by opening more food vans across Tiruchy, extending their generosity to the poor and homeless as well.

This act of giving back is a testament to their belief in conscious service, transcending mere charity.

As Manisha supports her husband’s endeavours, they both highlight the stark contrast between ordinary jobs and the life-risking roles of soldiers and ambulance drivers.

Their small act of providing free meals is a humble yet powerful gesture of recognition and honour towards those who put their lives on the line for the safety and well-being of others.
