India’s Train 18, a new era in rail travel
Train 18, India’s first engine-less, semi-high-speed train, made a grand entry at Delhi’s Safdarjung Railway Station on Thursday.
Heralded as a technological marvel, it is set to replace the iconic Shatabdi Express, which has been a cornerstone of Indian railways for over 30 years.
Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Train 18 was built in just 18 months at a cost of ₹100 crore.
Its sleek, engine-less design enables speeds of up to 160 km/h, offering a futuristic rail travel experience.
Features and Amenities
Train 18 is equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance passenger convenience and comfort:
- Modern Coaches: Fully air-conditioned, with spacious seating options in both executive and standard chair cars.
- Automatic Doors: Touch-free operation for easy access.
- Onboard Connectivity: Wi-Fi and an infotainment system for uninterrupted entertainment.
- GPS Passenger Information System: Provides real-time updates on speed, location, and arrival times.
- Bio-Vacuum Toilets: Including accessible facilities for passengers with disabilities.
- Rotating Seats: Executive chair car seats can rotate 180 degrees for added convenience.
- Pantry Facilities: Each coach has a mini-pantry to serve freshly heated or chilled food and beverages.
