India set to launch first hydrogen-powered train in 2024

India is gearing up for a major breakthrough in sustainable transportation by introducing its first hydrogen-powered train. The train is expected to undergo trials in December 2024.

This pioneering initiative will place India alongside Germany, France, Sweden, and China as the fifth country to operate eco-friendly hydrogen trains.

It marks a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint in the transportation sector.

The Indian Railways has embarked on this ambitious venture as part of its Hydrogen for Heritage initiative.

The initiative aims to introduce a total of 35 hydrogen trains across various routes.

Each train is projected to cost around ₹80 crores. Besides, an additional ₹70 crores have been earmarked for ground infrastructure improvements on heritage and hilly routes.

The first hydrogen train prototype will be tested on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.

The integration work for these trains is currently underway at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.

As per sources the train will run under Northern Railway’s Delhi Division, and extensive efforts are being made to ensure its success.

To meet international safety standards, Indian Railways has partnered with TUV-SUD.

It is a German company that helps conduct a comprehensive safety audit of the hydrogen-powered train system.

This step is crucial in ensuring the reliability and safety of this cutting-edge technology as India transitions to greener alternatives in public transportation.

The hydrogen fuel required for these trains will be produced using a 1-megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane electrolyser, located in Jind.

It will generate approximately 430 kg of hydrogen per day.

The Jind facility will also feature a 3,000 kg hydrogen storage setup and rapid refuelling dispensers to support efficient operations.

This hydrogen train initiative is a key component of India’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

The successful implementation of this project is anticipated to revolutionise railway travel in India, paving the way for more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
