Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024
Dev Uthani Ekadashi, a highly revered occasion in the Hindu calendar, marks the auspicious day when Lord Vishnu is believed to awaken from his four-month Yoga Nidra, or divine sleep, in Kshir Sagar.
Observed on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month, this year’s Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
With Lord Vishnu’s awakening, weddings, engagements, and other auspicious events are encouraged to commence, as the day is said to remove obstacles and bring blessings.
In Sanatan Dharma, it’s believed that during these four months, Lord Shiva oversees the universe while Vishnu rests.
On this sacred day, devotees honour Lord Vishnu, praying for happiness, peace, and successful new beginnings. Worshipers engage in a specific vrat (fast) as an offering of devotion and discipline. This fast, called the Dev Uthani Ekadashi Vrat, usually begins at sunset on the day before Ekadashi and continues until the next morning.
The breaking of the fast, or Parana, follows a carefully prescribed timing to maximize its spiritual benefits.
For Dev Uthani Ekadashi in 2024, the Parana should be observed between 6:42 AM and 8:51 AM on November 13, before the Dwadashi Tithi ends at 1:01 PM.
According to tradition, breaking the fast after Dwadashi ends is discouraged, as it is thought to negate the benefits of the fast. Therefore, devotees plan their day to complete Parana promptly within the given window.
A unique aspect of Dev Uthani Ekadashi is the belief that Lord Vishnu’s reawakening marks a time for divine blessings to flow, especially for those starting new chapters in life.
From engagements and marriages to other celebrations, the day symbolizes auspicious beginnings.
Devotees offer prayers, sing bhajans, and read holy scriptures to express their gratitude and joy, bringing families and communities together in spiritual celebration.
As you prepare to observe Dev Uthani Ekadashi, remember to adhere to these timings and rituals carefully.
This year, let November 12 be a day of reverence, gratitude, and spiritual connection with Lord Vishnu to invite positivity and prosperity into your life.
