TN woman sells Idli for ₹1

Can you imagine delicious idlis for ₹1, in an age when you can’t get a tea for ₹1? But, this Coimbatore woman sells idli for ₹1.

Kamalathal from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu has been making idlis and selling them for an affordable price to people in need for 30 years. Cooking is her passion. Initially, she used to sell it for 50 paise.

But, as the ingredients became expensive, she hiked the price to ₹1. The price remained unchanged for the last 15 years.

From preparing the batter to serving idli to people, Kamalathal does everything on her own. Her granddaughter-in-law, P. Aarthi accompanies her.

She makes chutney with the help of a grinding stone. She wakes up at 5:00 a.m. and prepares the batter for the idli. She uses eight kgs of rice for the batter.

Then she opens her stall at 6:00 a.m. and continues cooking until the batter lasts. She starts serving the customers from 7:00 a.m.

Kamalathal sells idlis for such a low price to feed as many people as she can. She does not do it for profit-making. Rather she says she is doing to gain religious merit.

She sells more than 1000 idlis daily. Feeding people is her priority and she has been doing this selflessly.

She cooks idlis using her traditional idli vessels on an earthen stove using firewood.

She says that she does not know how to use a gas stove, hence she uses the earthen stove.

But, her services were recognized by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group. He saw a video about her and appreciated her efforts on Twitter. He wanted to provide her with an LPG connection.

The tweet went viral and she became popular overnight.

She was immediately provided with a free LPG connection by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
