Every region has its own and unique resources. But not many people are aware of them. If they are educated about these resources, they will get benefitted from them.

Trinity Saioo from Meghalaya was worked as a teacher. Later she became a farmer. She is cultivating Lakadong Turmeric and creating awareness on it among other women. This turmeric variety is unique and native to Meghalaya.

Trinity has been conducting training sessions among rural women to grow this turmeric variety by way of organic farming. She was conferred with Padma Shri for her efforts to promote organic farming methods. She was also awarded the Balipara Foundation Award.

As soon as Trinity started farming, she formed a Self-help group (SHG) of women farmers. Now, nearly 100 women SHGs are working with her in turmeric farming. Trinity and other associated SHGs are transporting Lakadong Turmeric to various parts of the country.

Trinity says that though many people in her region had known the health benefits of Lakadong Turmeric, they had little knowledge of its cultivation methods.

Trinity has a family background in farming. Besides, she can speak Hindi and English fluently. Hence, she registered with the Spices Board of India. The Board encouraged her a lot to develop the variety of turmeric. She also communicated with the government officials about the subsidy schemes.

She then wanted to train other women on the cultivation of turmeric. She formed SHGs and a Society named Hills Curcumin & Spice Producer Society. There are 25 core members in the Society and 800 turmeric farmers.

She and her society members procured machines for the production and extraction process of turmeric. In addition to that, they gave money and seedlings to farmers for growing turmeric.

She also trained them in controlling pest infestation naturally. Thus, Trinity empowered many women. She wants many more women to join her.
