For love: He planted trees for 17 years
Often times, love can drive people to do unimaginable things, even if the loved one in question is no longer alive.
No one can define this better than Bereft Winston Howes, who gave an incredible gift to his late wife, which took him seventeen years to make.
Through a “flash of inspiration”, Bereft came up with his beautiful and sentimental idea.
He took a six-acre plot of land, facing his wife’s childhood home, and planted thousands of oak saplings in it over seventeen years.
As a farmer by profession, the task suited him, and the saplings soon grew into a fully-fledged wood.
However, the simple oak wood was not the only feature that Bereft left in this plot of land. In the middle of the plot, he left some of the land untouched, making a field in the shape of a heart.
There is nothing but grass planted in this field, and it faces toward the childhood home of Bereft’s wife.
Bereft and his family never told anyone else about the field, keeping it a family secret for a long time. However, it was accidentally spotted when a hot air balloonist passed over the area and discovered the heart-shaped meadow.
Thus, Bereft shows how truly undying someone’s love for another can be. After seventeen years of creating this plot of land, plus several more, he still sits in the heart-shaped field and thinks of all of the fond memories that he and his wife had shared when she was still alive.
He had placed a chair in the field, overlooking the hill where she used to live, and on most normal days, he sits in that chair and recalls fond remembrances of their love.
Bereft’s love for his late wife is everlasting, and his beautiful, equally-everlasting creation is proof of it.
