Fire sensor designed by a teen
Jayakumar, a 13 year old student got inspired to help save lives when his mother got injured in a fire accident years ago. His mother, who works at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi got injured in a fire accident. This inspired the young boy to do something that helps people in such situations. His solution was to create a low cost sensor for firecracker units that sets off a fire extinguisher.
Jayakumar said that fires are mainly caused in these factories due to lack of care from the owner. The crackers also rub together which results in heat. Jayakumar said that the heat sensor he created senses heat and triggers a danger bulb. It sets a preventive measure by starting a motor to sprinkle water.
The boy was honored for his invention in Bengaluru at an event which marked the sixth anniversary of another fire in 2010. In that fire, nine people were killed and many more were injured at the Carlton Towers office complex in Bengaluru.
Beyond Cartlon, an organization which was setup by relatives and survivors of the incident to remember those who died and also to work towards fire safety have honored the boy and his science teacher at school. The teacher encouraged Jayakumar to design the device.
The people of the organization have been fighting for fire safety ever since the incident. The entire group supports the idea of Jayakumar and are trying to support him in every way possible.
Justice Santosh Hedge, Former Karnataka Lokayukta also joined the group’s advisory board. He stated that the organization has been taking steps to prevent fire accidents throughout the year. They are also investigating whether new buildings are properly equipped with fire-fighting equipment. They have also honored fire-fighters for their life saving deeds and courage as part of an annual tradition.
