As several people are opting for organic products, various companies are also focusing on it.

However, acquiring organic food is not always possible for many people due to various reasons. In this scenario, some people want to grow food on their own. But, it has some constraints like availability of adequate land, water, usage of proper manure etc.

To solve this, a woman from Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, launched a rent-a-farm model. Usha Raju is a nutritionist. She started Urban Eco Farms in October last year.

Usha has been growing more than 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables on her terrace garden for the past few years. She has good knowledge of planting techniques and composting.

Before launching Urban Eco Farms, Usha received floods of requests for tips on growing vegetables at home. Several of them requested her to grow vegetables on their behalf as they lacked resources and time.

Hence, Usha decided to come up with a subscription model. She circulated it on social media.

A subscriber needs to rent land for at least three months. For a family of three to four members, 600 square feet of land is sufficient. After renting the land, users can select 12 vegetables of their choice out of 25. These vegetables include tomatoes, beans, okra, cucumber, brinjal, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, ivy gourd, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, drumstick, chillies, coriander, and curry leaves.

Usha rented a farm from her friend to grow vegetables in organic methods. She trained some farm labourers for this.

These farm labourers look after the farm. Subscribers can visit the plot to learn various things about their harvest.

Usha visits the farm regularly. She takes photos of the farm and shares them with subscribers along with updates.

The subscribers can get everything from the land, seeds to home delivery of 6 to 8 kilograms of vegetables every week at a monthly rent of ₹2,400.
