Seedbasket is an e-commerce marketplace based in Hyderabad. It has emerged as one of India’s leading platforms for purchasing vegetable seeds, fruit seeds, grow bags, and other home/terrace gardening products.

Founded by Chandana Gade, who hails from an agricultural background, Seedbasket aims to address the growing concerns regarding the use of pesticides and chemicals in food production.

Chandana, along with her husband Naveen Gade, launched the website in 2016 after witnessing alarming news about the unhygienic cultivation practices and excessive pesticide use in leafy vegetables grown under the Musi River water.

Despite facing challenges, Chandana dedicated six months to setting up the website and extensively researching the market, seed suppliers, and gardening materials.

Simultaneously, she attended relevant training sessions to enhance her knowledge of home gardening. With a well-planned approach, Seedbasket started receiving orders, albeit small in the beginning. However, the positive reviews propelled Chandana and her team to invest more effort into the venture.

A key driving factor behind the establishment of Seedbasket was the absence of a dedicated website providing native/desi vegetable seeds and catering to the needs of home gardeners.

To address this gap, Chandana ensured that Seedbasket not only offered a wide range of desi seeds but also incorporated all the necessary products for successful home gardening.

The website currently features around 200 different products, including native vegetable seeds, herbal, exotic and hybrid seeds, seasonal flowers, and gardening materials.

The price range starts from ₹25/-. Within six months of launching, Seedbasket began generating profits and garnered media attention from regional newspapers, television channels, and agricultural magazines.

The COVID-19 pandemic further fueled the interest in home gardening as people became increasingly conscious of their health and started growing their own food on balconies, terraces, and open spaces.

Seedbasket witnessed a surge in orders not only from urban areas but also from rural regions.

Previously, the website received orders from Indians residing in different countries; however, due to export restrictions imposed during the pandemic, Seedbasket temporarily halted international retail supply.

Recognizing that many customers lacked basic gardening knowledge, Chandana ensured that every order included a manual with valuable information on soil selection, watering techniques, pest control, and plant care.

This initiative aimed to assist beginners in their gardening journey. Additionally, Seedbasket maintains a YouTube channel to share further insights and knowledge on gardening.

With over 10,000 satisfied customers across India, Seedbasket has established itself as one of the top three home-garden e-commerce marketplaces in the country.

Chandana Gade’s vision of providing desi seeds and promoting home gardening has struck a chord with customers seeking healthier alternatives and sustainable food sources.

Seedbasket continues to thrive, empowering individuals to take control of their food production and embrace the joys of gardening.
