Fery Rides: Making Urban Travel Safer for Women
Safe and reliable transportation remains a challenge for women across Indian cities.
Fery Rides, a women-led mobility startup, is addressing this concern with a dedicated ride-hailing service designed exclusively for women passengers and operated by trained, verified women drivers.
Launched in April 2023, the platform aims to make everyday commuting more comfortable and dependable.
Women can use the service to travel to workplaces, colleges, appointments, airports and other destinations.
By placing women at the centre of its operations, Fery Rides seeks to create a greater sense of security during daily journeys.
The platform combines technology with safety-focused features. Its app supports convenient ride bookings, real-time tracking and SOS alerts.
Additionally, WhatsApp-enabled customer support gives passengers another channel to seek assistance. These features can help users monitor their journeys and access support when required.
Fery Rides also operates an all-electric fleet, bringing sustainability into its mobility model. Since its launch, the startup has completed more than 65,000 rides, onboarded over 250 women drivers and crossed 50,000 app downloads.
It currently operates in Gurugram and has partnered with Sakha Cabs to facilitate airport transfers. The company has also participated in pilot operations during the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.
Beyond passenger services, Fery Rides focuses on creating livelihood opportunities for women. Its drivers, known as “Sister Partners,” can access driving opportunities in a sector where women remain underrepresented.
The model aims to support financial independence, build professional confidence and encourage more women to participate in the gig economy.
However, expanding this approach presents several challenges. The startup needs to recruit enough qualified women drivers to meet demand while maintaining consistent service availability.
Limited driver supply could affect waiting times, particularly during peak hours or in newly entered locations.
Affordability and operational costs are other concerns. Electric vehicles require charging infrastructure and maintenance, while safety systems and driver training also demand investment.
Furthermore, Fery Rides must compete with established ride-hailing platforms that offer broader coverage and larger driver networks.
As it expands into more cities, the startup will need to balance passenger safety, convenience and competitive pricing.
Its ability to maintain reliable service while creating sustainable opportunities for women will be crucial to its long-term growth.
