NCW Seeks Safer Rides for Women
Safety during app-based travel cannot depend on passengers handling risks alone.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has proposed new measures to make cabs, autos and bike taxis safer for women.
One major proposal would let women cancel rides without a penalty when the arriving driver or vehicle differs from the details shown on the app.
This could help passengers avoid uncertain situations without worrying about cancellation charges.
The guidelines also seek stricter checks before drivers begin operating. Platforms should conduct background checks and police verification. They should also provide regular training on women’s safety and responsible conduct.
Technology could further strengthen protection during a journey. Apps should detect unusual route changes and alert passengers and companies.
They should also flag vehicles that remain stationary for unusually long periods without explanation.
Emergency support is another key focus. Women should have easy access to an SOS button throughout their journey.
Platforms should offer 24×7 emergency assistance and act swiftly when passengers report safety concerns during their journeys.
Late-night travel requires additional safeguards, according to the guidelines. Companies should offer enhanced driver verification, safe-drop facilities and trip-sharing options.
Passengers should be able to share journey details with trusted contacts when required.
The NCW has also stressed the importance of safe drop-offs. Drivers should avoid leaving women at isolated or unsafe locations.
Senior women passengers should receive additional assistance where necessary.
Complaint handling must improve as well. Cases requiring police intervention should be forwarded without delay.
Platforms should securely preserve journey records when they could assist investigations.
The proposed measures place safety responsibility on mobility companies, transport authorities and police.
Stronger verification, real-time alerts and quicker emergency responses could help prevent risks from worsening.
The framework also promotes better complaint handling and coordination, ensuring women passengers receive timely support before, during and after their journeys.
