First transgender police SI in Tamil Nadu
A transgender is set to become the first ever transgender sub inspector of police in Tamil Nadu after the Madras High Court directed Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) to appoint her. The court stated that she is entitled to get the job.
Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana who comprised the first bench have also ordered TNUSRB to include transgenders as a “third category” by the next recruitment process.
K. Prithika Yashini’s application was initially rejected. However the court has directed the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) to consider her application for the post.
The judges have stated they believe she is entitled to be recruited to the post of sub-inspector. They added that her result will bring hope for her to carry out the duties with dedication and commitment and improve the cause of other transgenders. They appreciated the cause by Yashini and the fair stand taken by Advocate General A L Somayaj.
Yashinki was a male by the name of K. Pradeep Kumar till the completion of PG diploma course in Computer Application, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. After that, she underwent a sex change at Kilpauk Medical College. She legally notified this.
She successfully cleared the exam for the post; however, she faced problems in the field trials as she missed the 100 meter cut off race by one second. Due to this reason she was rejected. However, Yashini did not accept it and went to court challenging the rejection.
The court bench has stated that a difference of 1.11 seconds in a physical endurance test should not come in the way of her getting the post. They said that she will have to meet the benchmark of the recruitment process. In the past there were two transgenders who were recruited and are working as police constables. Yet, there are no transgender sub inspectors. Yashini will be the first transgender SI.
