Delhi launches aftercare support scheme for young adults
Transitioning into adulthood often becomes difficult for children leaving institutional care.
Recognising this challenge, the Delhi government has launched the ‘Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons’ to support vulnerable youth after they exit child care institutions.
Announced on Mother’s Day, the initiative aims to provide financial, educational and emotional support to young individuals struggling to build independent lives.
The government has earmarked ₹3.5 crore for the scheme in the 2026-27 financial year.
Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance for higher education, skill development and vocational training.
Additionally, the scheme will connect young adults with internships and employment opportunities to improve long-term stability and self-reliance.
The support package also includes monthly stipends and financial assistance to help beneficiaries manage essential expenses during their transition period.
Alongside economic support, the government plans to offer mentoring, counselling and career guidance services. Rehabilitation assistance and emergency support will also be provided whenever required.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that many children receive institutional care during childhood but face uncertainty once they leave these facilities.
Therefore, the new scheme has been introduced under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
According to the government, beneficiaries will be selected through detailed need-based assessments.
Authorities will also prepare individual care plans to address specific educational, emotional and professional requirements.
Furthermore, officials will conduct regular monitoring and reviews at both district and state levels to ensure effective implementation.
To strengthen oversight, the government will establish a State Aftercare Committee led by the Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department.
The committee will supervise policy decisions, implementation and monitoring of the programme.
Through this initiative, the Delhi government aims to create a stronger safety net for young adults leaving institutional care while helping them move towards stable and independent futures.
