Canada welcomes digital nomads with new immigration program
Dreaming of a remote life in Canada? Now’s your shot, as the Canadian government has just unveiled an enticing immigration initiative tailored for digital nomads.
This recently launched program offers an avenue for digital nomads to experience Canadian life while working and residing remotely.
Presently, digital nomads employed by foreign entities can stay in Canada for up to six months under visitor status, adhering to existing immigration regulations.
However, the new program, which was announced in July, takes it a step further.
Digital nomads can now seek a temporary work permit, extending their Canadian stay by an additional three years, provided they secure employment with a Canadian employer.
Canada’s immigration minister sees this as an opportunity for individuals to test-drive the country and potentially settle down.
He emphasizes that the program not only benefits those keen on experiencing Canada’s allure but also serves as a strategic solution to the labour shortage, particularly in crucial tech roles.
Labour migration is a key concern. Reports reveal that Canada loses approximately 0.7% of its population to the U.S. annually, predominantly skilled workers seeking higher-paying prospects in tech, finance, and popular industries.
The Canadian tech sector, while promising, trails behind the considerable earning potential in tech hubs like New York or San Francisco.
This innovative move places Canada among over 30 nations that have embraced similar initiatives to attract digital nomads, including Spain and Portugal.
If you’re considering applying for a temporary Canadian visa, arm yourself with a government-issued passport and proof of income.

Patience is key as approvals might not be immediate. First things first, ascertain the travel authorization needed to enter Canada as a visitor, varying based on your nationality.
For U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, a visitor visa or an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) isn’t obligatory.
For other countries, a visitor visa or eTA may be required.
Applying for an eTA online costs CAD$7 and can yield approval within minutes, although it might take a few days in some cases.
In a bid to bolster its workforce and allure, Canada’s digital nomad-friendly initiative offers a tantalizing invitation to those seeking an alternative working lifestyle against the backdrop of a diverse and scenic country.
