India and Canada reset ties with fresh momentum at the G7

India and Canada have taken major steps to reset their diplomatic ties.

At the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian PM Mark Carney in what was described as a “positive and constructive” meeting.

Both leaders agreed to restore High Commissioners to each other’s capitals.

This marks the first step toward reviving stability in the relationship, which had been strained since 2023.

They also decided to resume senior-level talks on trade, connectivity, and people-to-people contact.

Trade negotiations, which were paused, will soon resume. Officials from both countries have been instructed to fast-track discussions.

Modi and Carney reaffirmed their shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.

The two nations also agreed to collaborate on several global challenges. These include clean energy, AI, digital infrastructure, food security, and critical minerals. They also discussed supply chains and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy.

PM Modi praised Canada for successfully hosting the G7. He expressed optimism about building momentum in India-Canada ties.

He said areas like trade, space, fertilisers, and critical minerals have huge potential.

Carney called India’s presence at the G7 since 2019 a sign of its growing global role. He praised Modi’s leadership, especially in energy transition and AI.

He also flagged concerns over transnational crime and repression.

Following the talks, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the meeting was forward-looking.

He emphasised that calibrated steps will follow to bring ties back on track.

The Canadian PM’s Office echoed similar sentiments. Their statement highlighted mutual respect, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as guiding principles.

It also emphasised restoring full diplomatic services to citizens and businesses.

This is Modi’s first visit to Canada in ten years. It comes after last year’s tensions over allegations involving a pro-Khalistan separatist. India had dismissed those claims as “absurd” and politically driven.

Now, with renewed dialogue and cooperation, both nations aim to rebuild trust. Economic and strategic interests will be key drivers in this reset.

This diplomatic thaw could unlock new opportunities, not just in trade worth billions of rupees, but also in global partnerships.
