Robots made by a seven-year-old

TECH FOSS 2K16 is an event where engineering and technology graduates participate. However, this year, the event saw a unique participant, a boy studying second grade. Saaran Sumesh, a second grader from Kochi participated in this event along with engineering and technology graduates. In the event, he displayed a cleaning robot, a robotic hand, and a walking stick for the visually impaired.

TECH FOSS 2K16 was organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) and the Computer Society of India along with Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre of the Institute.

Saaran’s participation took everyone by surprise and many were impressed by the boy’s explanations of his innovations. Saaran, who is just seven years old, has presented his models with amazing skills. Dr. D. Vincent H. Wilson, the principal of TIST said that Saaran has surprised everyone at the event. The young boy showed the uses of his robots and also explained how he made them.

The young wizard has programmed his cleaning bot to work autonomously. He is planning to make sumo fighting robots as his next project. He has already made many other models like autorickshaw robot, a humanoid that can fire bullets, and a Lego calculator.


TECH FOSS 2K16 had as many as 25 projects displayed there by several engineering and polytechnic students. Out of all the projects that were displayed there, Saarang’s presentation and work has become the highlight of the event.

At the event, the organizers also conducted a workshop on Android and Arduino for the participants.

Other parts of the event were an Olympiad, a gaming contest, a hardware project competition, an ‘app idea’ contest, etc. Saaran’s creations managed to gain the spotlight because of the young boy’s talent. Here’s to the best of luck for Saaran and his future projects.
