A 15-year old Indian American kid from California developed an amazing invention to help Parkinson’s patients. His name is Utkarsh Tandon. The ring he developed is useful for the patients as it tracks their movements. The project was originally supposed to be a science fair project, but he later turned it into an actual ring for patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The movements tracked by the ring helps in generating a better picture of the patient’s condition so that his or her doctor can evaluate the situation.

Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 10 million people all over the world. Tandon named the ring ‘OneRing’ based on the ring in JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. He wants to help these patients.

The plastic ring has a microchip which calculates the movement. It has a written algorithm for it which classifies the wearer’s movements and records them. There are three levels of classification in the ring.

They are: Dyskinesia, Bradykinesia, and tremor. The ring sends the recorded movements to an app. The app compiles this data and creates daily reports.

The data is sent to the patient’s doctor so that the doctor can monitor the symptoms and condition of the patient. This enables the doctor to take measures accordingly and offer solutions.

For his creation, Utkarsh won the California State Science Fair. He also received a grant from the UCLS Brain Research Institute. Utkash aims to head his own company. For that, he started a Kickstarter campaign to get money. He did two rounds of fundraising by kickstarter and finally managed to collect enough funds to start his own company.

In order to help more people understand the concept of the OneRing, Utkarsh even made a video describing the features and uses of the ring. He looks to further make more inventions to revolutionize various things.
