Know more about ISRO’s record launch
A record was set by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) after launching 20 satellites in 26 minutes. The launch includes 17 foreign payloads. Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-34 carried India’s latest earth observation Cartosat-2 series satellite.
This is the biggest launch ever done by ISRO in terms of the number of satellites. Previously, ISRO launched 10 satellites in April 2008. Here are some more facts about this historical launch mission.
The total weight of all 20 satellites carried by PSLV C-34 was about 1,288 kg.
In the historical mission, Cartosat-2 series satellite was the primary satellite. It will be used for cartographic (drawing maps) applications, Land Information System (LIS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) applications.
17 foreign small satellites were carried by the 320 tonne PSLV C-34. The payloads from countries like Canada, Indonesia, Germany and the US.
Satellites like LAPAN-A3 from Indonesia, Brios from Germany, M3MSat and GHSSat-D from Canada, SkySat Gen 2-1 and 12 Dove satellites from the United States were launched in this mission.
The SkySat Gen2-1 is a 110 kg small Earth imaging satellite. It was designed and built by Terra Bella which is under Google.
The 12 Dove satellites which were launched in this historical mission each weigh around 4.7 kg. They are launched for the purpose of earth imaging satellite. The dove satellites were developed by US-based Planet Labs.
In this mission, PSLV C-34 also carried two student satellites. These two satellites were designed by students of India. The Satyabhama Sat was designed and developed by students of Sathyabama University, Chennai and Swayam was designed by the students of Pune’s College of Engineering.
The mission was a huge success. Within just 30 minutes after the launch, the PSLV by ISRO has successfully placed the satellites in the designated polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).
