Valluvar Vasippu Kalam sparks a reading revolution in rural Tamil Nadu

Books have an unparalleled ability to transport readers to new worlds, and few pleasures compare to enjoying a good book on a rainy day.

In Kambur, a small village in Tamil Nadu’s Kottampatti block, a community initiative called Valluvar Vasippu Kalam ignites a passion for reading among local children and youth.

This initiative started during the uncertain days of the Covid-19 pandemic, has blossomed into a thriving forum, fostering a love for literature and learning.

The origins of Valluvar Vasippu Kalam are traced back to the pandemic when the Kambur Panchayat Youth Club formed a youth readers’ forum.

Initially, the forum aimed to enhance youth awareness about local governance, politics, and economics. Encouraged by its success, the forum extended its reach to children two years ago.

Every Saturday evening, children up to 15 years old gather to participate in lively reading sessions that stimulate their imagination.

According to C Selvaraj, the coordinator of the Kambur Panchayat Youth Club, the forum quickly became a vibrant hub of activity.

Initially, older youths read books aloud to the children but as interest grew, each child was given a book to read on their own and after that, they had to present the story to the group.

Prizes like pens, pencils, and chocolates are awarded to the best presenters, motivating the children further.

The impact of Valluvar Vasippu Kalam extends beyond Kambur. Many people have been bringing their children to the forum regularly for over two years.

They shared how the forum transformed their children’s attitudes towards reading, boosting their academic performance and writing skills.

For young participants, the forum has opened doors to school competitions and boosted their confidence. Similarly, some students, credit the forum with helping them overcome shyness and express themselves more confidently.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital distractions, Valluvar Vasippu Kalam reminds us of the timeless value of books.

By nurturing a reading habit, the youth of Kambur are enriching their lives and shaping a brighter future.
