Significance of the weapons of Goddess Durga
Goddess Durga, the epitome of the power killed Mahishasura. For this reason, devotees worship Goddess Durga and celebrate the festival of Navratri.
Goddess Durga is depicted with 10 arms, each with a weapon. The arms represent the power of the goddess to protect her devotees from all directions including eight corners and the earth and sky. Each weapon has its significance.
Trishul or Trident was gifted by Lord Shiva to the goddess. The Trishul has three sharp edges that symbolize the three qualities – Satva (salvation), Rajas (peace), and Tamas (serenity). One must balance all of these qualities and keep calm to attain peace and salvation.
Sudarshan Chakra was gifted by Lord Vishnu. It symbolizes the centre of creation and righteousness. This weapon destroys evil and protects righteousness.
Lotus was gifted by Lord Brahma. It symbolizes wisdom and liberation. It also signifies the awakening of spiritual consciousness.
Conch signifies the power of the goddess to destroy all negative elements. It represents the sacred sound of ‘Om’.
Sword signifies intellect and knowledge. One can overcome battles of the world with the power of knowledge.
Thunderbolt symbolizes firmness and supreme power of the goddess. She helps her devotees solve problems bravely without losing confidence.
Bow and arrow symbolize energy. While the arrow signifies the importance to focus on aim, the bow suggests having the potential to achieve the aim and goal. It also signifies that the goddess has control over all the sources of energy.
Spear signifies auspiciousness and fiery power. Humans should stay away from wrongdoings and do the right deeds. They should overcome obstacles using their inner power.
Axe represents courage when fighting evil. One should suppress evil feelings.
The snake symbolizes realization and vigour. It also signifies the movement from a lower state of consciousness to a higher state of mind to get divine blessings.
