Significance of Lord Ganesha | Fusion - WeRIndia

Lord Ganesha is one of the popular deities in the Hindu religion. As Ganesh Chaturthi is approaching, it is apt to know the significance of Lord Ganesha.

As per Puranas, Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, from the dirt or turmeric paste to guard the home when she was bathing. The boy obeyed the command of his mother and not allowed Lord Shiva to enter His home. Infuriated Shiva cut off the head of the boy and resurrected him at the request of Parvati, by placing an elephant’s head. Thus, Ganesha performed his duty with dedication at the cost of his life.

Significance and description Lord Ganesha represents as follows:

The large head of Lord Ganapathi represents immense wisdom and understanding. It tells the need of having great perfection in life.

Large ears represent spiritual knowledge. They signify that one must listen to others and leave unnecessary matters. His wide mouth signifies the human desire for the materialistic world.

The small eyes of Lord Vinayaka represent concentration. It is said that objects appear bigger than their actual size to elephants. Thus, humans also should see things clearly and avoid misleading sights.

His stomach represents the celebration of life. It also teaches the necessity to deal with good and bad in life with joy. In other words, one should handle life as it is irrespective of circumstances.

Ganesha’s posture also teaches you to keep your feet on the ground. He sits with one leg folded and keeping the other leg on the ground. That means one should manage life in the world while practising detachment and attaining spiritual knowledge. It also says that one should aim for high but not forget their base.

His trunk represents adaptability and flexibility. His four arms signify four inner attributes – mind, ego, intellect and conscience. His hands hold various things. The rope symbolizes the need to attain spiritual goals, the lotus represents self-realization, and the axe signifies the elimination of desires.
