Nestled in tranquillity, the Mopuru Bhairaveswara Swami temple emanates an aura of devotion, mystique, and serenity.

According to legend, Lord Shiva, having fulfilled a demon’s wish, found himself in a dilemma.

Taking the form of the rock deity Bhairaveswara on this hillock, Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mohini, enticed the demon Bhasmasura to his demise.

Eventually, the name transformed from Mohanagiri Bhairaveswara to Mopuru Bhairaveswara.

As the tale goes, the rock manifestation of Bhairaveswara continued to grow until his sister intervened, placing her hand upon him to halt the expansion.

In response, an angered Bhairaveswara demanded his sister depart, leading her to embody Akka Pappuramma at the foot of the hillock.

It is widely believed that one’s religious pilgrimage remains incomplete without paying homage to Akka Pappuramma.

Situated on a hillock encircled by a river and neighbouring villages such as Nallachervu Palle, Kondreddi Palle, and Nare Palle, the temple rests within the Vemula Mandalam of Kadapa district.

Visitors can reach the temple by bus from Pulivendula or Prodattur, followed by a 3 to 4-km trek.

A road leading to the temple is accessible, approximately 30 minutes from Pulivendula and 60 minutes from Prodattur.

Ancient inscriptions discovered at the temple date back to the 12th century AD, revealing the temple’s significance during the reign of the Kakatiya rulers.

Over the centuries, devotees not only from Andhra Pradesh but also from neighbouring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have flocked to this revered site.

The temple showcases numerous statues of Nayanars, highlighting their deep devotion to Lord Shiva.

Additionally, the consecration of Navagrahas and the pilgrimage rituals undertaken by Swami Ayyappa devotees before their journey to Kerala for blessings have added to the temple’s prominence.

Thanks to the contributions of devoted worshippers and financial aid from the Endowment Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, significant renovations have been completed.

The restoration of the inner sanctum tower, the construction of the outer gateway tower, and the establishment of a marriage hall stand as testaments to the temple’s continuous rejuvenation.
