Shorter bus route of Agartala-Kolkata
The bus route between Agarta and Kolkata via Bangladesh which will save over 1000 km of journey is set for a trial run on June 1 -3. As part of the test run, a bus will be carrying West Bengal government officials starting from Kolkata on June 1st. The bus will follow the route via Bangladesh and reach Agartala on June 2 and it would return the next day, said the Transport Minister Manik Dey.
He further added that the West Bengal government’s Principal Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay, who will lead the officials during the trial run, informed Tripura’s Transport Secretary Samarjit Bhowmik about this in a letter.
The path to Agarthala via Guwahati is 1,650 km from Kolkata by road. On the other hand, the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 600km.
The transport minister of Tripura said that the state government has been demanding direct bus services between Tripura and other northeastern states and Kolkata through Bangladesh for the sake of better transportation for people of the region.
Since March 2010, many meetings were held between the officials of the ministries of external affairs and road transport and highways, Tripura and West Bengal governments regarding this issue. Finally, the trial run is being held.
