Shani Shingnapur, Maharashtra

You need to worry if you lose your lock and key in this village of Shani Shingnapur, because locks are not sold, most probably. None of the houses, shops or halls believe in keeping anything under lock, as this is one village that believes in the open door policy. Literally.
Only two thefts have been reported so far—and the guilty must be getting their just deserts from Shani, the villagers believe.
Nestling in Nevasa taluk, Ahmednagar, the village has a popular temple housing shani, a Hindu god who lives in Saturn (with open doors, presumably). This is the ‘jagrut devasthan’ or temple alive. The ‘Swayambhu’ or self-evolved deity is rumoured to have emerged from earth like a black but imposing stone. Though no one knows the exact period, it is believed that the Swayambhu Shanaishwara statue was found from times immemorial by shepherds of the then local hamlet. It is believed to have started since the birth of the Kali Yuga.
Amazingly, even the bank here is always open. In 2011, the United Commercial (UCO) Bank opened a ‘lockless’ branch here, the first of its kind—and perhaps the last in the country—going by its zero crime rate!
