Free bus ride scheme increases female commuters in Delhi | Fusion - WeRIndia

Delhi government announced free bus ride scheme for women commuters. Many female commuters in the Nation’s capital are using the scheme.

The data shows that the scheme is a success with 10 per cent increase in the number of women commuters in public buses.

The free-ride scheme was rolled out by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on October 29. Within a month, the scheme proved to be a success with the increase in the number of women who travel in buses.

The official data reveals that there is an upsurge of nearly 10 per cent in the number of female commuters since the implementation of the free-ride scheme in buses.

The percentage of female commuters was earlier 33 in buses. But, it increased to 44 per cent after the implementation of the scheme.

Women commuters are issued pink tickets of denomination of ₹10 under this scheme. They are single journey passes.

The number of female commuters is counted using the pink tickets issued to them.

The Delhi government would reimburse the cost of the tickets to the transporters as per the number of tickets issued.

The percentage of women in buses was in the range of 32 per cent on the first day of the commencement of the scheme and 42 per cent on November 19.

The free bus ride scheme is available in all buses operated by DTC and cluster scheme operators including services to the airport and other special buses in Noida-NCR.

All women can avail these free bus rides. However, the female employees of the city government will have to give up their transport allowance to make use of the scheme.

The increase in the number of female commuters in public transport is a good sign in Delhi as it would also be helpful in reducing their personal vehicles and thereby vehicular pollution.
