Culture is very important for any country as it reveals many things about it. So, it is essential for the government and citizens to preserve our culture. The Ministry of Tourism in coordination with Ministry of Culture has launched the Swacch Paryatan mobile app in order to encourage people in protecting and improving the heritage monuments in India.

Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister of State for Culture & Tourism (Independent Charge) & Minister of State for Civil Aviation talked about the importance of this app during its launch. He encouraged people to download this app and notify them if they find a dirty spot.

He urged that people should take responsibility to help protect these Heritage sites for the next generation.

At present, the mobile app can be used at 25 ‘Adarsh Smarak’ (heritage structures) like Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar , Sarnath, Humayun’s Tomb, Red Fort and, Khajuraho.


With this app, the Tourism and Culture Ministries can now crowd source their observation of the monuments. The visitors of these monuments will now have a place to take pictures and post those on a specific platform made for this purpose. The ministry encourages visitors post every violation like littering and disfiguring of the structures.

It was stated, that the pictures taken by the visitors will be sent to a control room at the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). ASI takes care of monitoring and protecting these monuments. The problems posted by the visitors will be taken care of the nodal officers assigned for this. The officers will also notify the visitors about the action taken.

The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 gives right for the government to punish those who destroys, removes, injures, alters, defaces, imperils or misuses a protected monument. It can be imprisonment up to three months or a fine of up to five thousand rupees and sometimes both.
